Race execution guide
Fitness-race pacing basics
Open below threshold, protect repeatable technique, and judge each station by the run that follows—not only by how quickly you can finish the station itself.
How hard should the first run feel?
Controlled enough that it almost feels too easy. The goal is a pace you can reproduce after stations, not the fastest standalone first kilometre.
An aggressive opening raises the cost of every later station and can damage running form long before the final third. Use a recent measured running benchmark to define a range, then adjust for course, conditions and experience.
A Octalap pacing sheet is a planning aid, not a guaranteed split or finish-time prediction.
Should I attack my strongest station?
Use strength to stay efficient, not to create a spike that compromises the next run.
A strong station can save time with clean movement and fewer breaks. It should not become an unplanned maximum effort. The more useful question is whether the exit pace and breathing remain under control.
At a weak station, planned short breaks can be faster overall than waiting for movement quality to collapse. Decide the break rule before fatigue makes the decision for you.
How should I handle transitions?
Practise a simple under-ten-second routine: arrive under control, set up immediately and leave at a pace you can stabilise.
Transition practice belongs inside selected run–station–run sessions. It should reduce hesitation and equipment setup errors, not turn every hybrid workout into a race.
Use the official venue instructions on race day. Course layout, judging and equipment position can differ from training.
What changes in race week?
Reduce volume while keeping short familiar touches of pace and technique; do not add a final hard simulation or unfamiliar test.
The final work cannot create new fitness in time, but it can create soreness. Keep ordinary sleep, meals and hydration stable and arrive with a clear opening pace and break strategy.
Concerning symptoms, illness or persistent pain are reasons to stop or modify training and seek appropriate professional advice, not signals to solve with a more aggressive taper.
