What does race readiness actually mean?
Fitness race readiness is not one lift, one run time, or one heroic simulation. A run-and-station event asks you to repeat aerobic work while your legs, grip, breathing and movement quality are already under pressure. A useful readiness estimate therefore looks across running plus the functional stations instead of treating strength and endurance as separate sports. How should I train for my first hybrid fitness race?
Start with repeatability. Most first-time athletes do not need more random suffering; they need a week they can recover from and repeat. A balanced training plan normally includes one interval run, one easy or longer aerobic run, two station-strength exposures and a controlled hybrid session when weekly availability allows. That structure teaches you to run efficiently, build the specific muscular endurance required by the stations and practise transitions without turning every day into a race.
Build volume gradually. Increasing total work by roughly five to ten percent can be reasonable when recovery, technique and schedule are stable, but progression is not automatic. A busy week, unusual soreness or several missed sessions is a reason to hold or reduce work, not to stack missed training onto the next weekend. Deload weeks and a final taper are part of training, not breaks from it.
Is running or station strength more important?
Both matter, but running connects the entire race. Improving pace by a small amount across repeated kilometres can save time without requiring risky station efforts. At the same time, a weak station can raise heart rate, damage running form and create long recovery periods later in the event. What if my gym does not have every station?
Train the movement demand, not just the branded machine. No sled may mean heavy backward drags, leg press work or resisted marches. No SkiErg may mean banded straight-arm pulls combined with rower intervals. A kettlebell can replace a sandbag for lunges, and loaded carries can be trained with dumbbells. Substitutions are not identical, so use the real equipment when it becomes available, but missing one machine should not erase an entire training quality.
How many weeks do I need before race day?
Eight to sixteen weeks is a practical planning window for many recreational athletes who already train consistently. The useful number is not the longest plan you can buy; it is the number of weeks between today and your event, with enough room for gradual progression, a deload and a final taper. Starting closer to race day means prioritising the highest-value work and avoiding a rushed attempt to copy months of missed volume. Starting earlier does not mean pushing hard for longer. It creates space to improve technique, repeat manageable weeks and absorb normal disruptions without turning every missed session into an emergency.
What should change during race week?
Race week should preserve familiarity while reducing fatigue. Keep short touches of running pace and station technique, but remove the volume that would leave soreness or heavy legs on the start line. Avoid last-minute fitness tests, unfamiliar equipment and hard simulations that cannot create meaningful adaptation before the event. Sleep, ordinary meals, hydration and a clear pacing plan matter more than squeezing in one final punishing workout. A taper is not proof that training stopped working; it is how the work already completed becomes available on race day.
How accurate is this readiness calculator?

When should I reduce training?
Persistent pain, worsening symptoms, illness and unusual fatigue are not optimisation problems for an app to solve. Stop or modify work that aggravates symptoms and speak with a qualified medical professional when appropriate. For ordinary training fatigue, use trends rather than one bad day: several poor sessions, falling motivation and rising soreness together are stronger signals than a single difficult workout. Readiness is training guidance and never medical clearance.
